Our Programs

The World Health organisation defines “health promotion” as the the social and political action for health. It seeks to empower people with a knowledge and an understanding of health and to create conditions conducive to pursuing healthy lifestyles.

We implement two programs on our annual trips: Compass Programs and Partner Programs. Respectively, our programs are designed to empower individuals to live healthy lives, and optimise the impact of our partnered organisations. Click on the links below to learn more about our programs.

SEX EDUCATION

Young people worldwide are faced with the challenges of growing up and understanding the changes that take place during puberty. At such a crucial stage, it is imperative that they achieve a level of education and understanding about sex and sexual health. Compass’ Sex Education program aims to strengthen the knowledge of students at the School of St Yared around a number of sexual health issues. Compass aims to to encourage students at the School of St. Yared to identify qualities of healthy and unhealthy relationships; to inform students of the physical and emotional changes that occur during puberty; and to equip students with practical knowledge around sex, consent, contraceptives and sexually transmitted diseases.

HEALTHY LIVING

Performance at school is dependent on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Going to school without a nutritious breakfast can affect a child’s mental ability to cope throughout the day. Compass aims to help address this global health challenge by providing nutritional education to students at the School of St. Yared as a means of increasing school performance and preventing adverse health outcomes in the future; to provide simple sanitation interventions that students can practice and spread to their family and community to prevent the spread of communicable diseases; and to promote the benefits of regular physical activity.

FIRST AID

All students have a right to an education in a safe and healthy environment. This includes being able to access basic first aid in the event they are hurt or become unwell. Compass places students in Ethiopia to empower the local community and staff of St Yared's school to be able to confidently provide first aid in a safe, effective manner through an education program targeted at school teachers and staff.

Mental health

MENTAL HEALTH

Mental health is “a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.” Compass’ Mental Health program catalyses conversation about wellness and encourages students to look out for each other. It promotes having strong social connections, good personal relationships and how to deal with the stress.
