Clare and I got a bit of a sleep-in today as we were picked up outside our hostel at 7:30am to travel to school and deliver Compass’ Healthy Living program. Farensay is The School of St Yared campus where Grades 1 to 4 learn, eat and play. As we walked up the path towards the school, we saw all the students dancing along with their teachers for their morning fitness regime!
The Grade 4 students had a Compass program first up to start their day. Students learnt about healthy foods and food groups. We did lots of drawing and colouring and had the stereo playing in the background – I was in my element. We then brainstormed the importance of hand-wash and as a class, practiced the correct technique.
Over recess, Clare and I worked on school reports for Hope for Children, whilst the students danced to the loud music that was played through the school. We joined the kids during lunch, and Clare showed off her impressive danced moves! We also got a chance to speak to the staff and Health Officer at the school, and got some great ideas for future programs to bring in December.
After school, we had home visits again. We find these visits truely eye-opening as we visit the homes of the students, meet their parents, and learn more about their lives, and dreams for the future.
