Today started at 6:30am, where Katie and I were picked up by St Yared’s school bus. With 20 other students, we headed to the campus, which is situated an hour out of Addis Ababa. For us, school started with three consecutive classes. The Year 5s competed Compass’ Healthy Living Program, where we explored various healthy and unhealthy foods, introduced the students to the Healthy Eating Pyramid, and learnt about the digestive system. The Year 6s and 7s competed Part 1 of the Sexual Health Program. We debunked myths about sex and puberty, and discussed the key qualities of a healthy relationship. At lunch, we were poor examples of Australians on the soccer field, and had our hair braided by some of the girls. After lunch, we carried out some of our partner’s (Hope for Children) programs by assisting in writing reports for the students. It certainly is wet season in Ethiopia – it poured down as we left on the hour-long bus trip back to Addis. The day ended at sunset, and we were both exhausted!
