About Us

WHAT WE DO

Compass has two separate, yet complementary, arms.

  1. Presence on the Ground: Each year, a team of 8-10 UWA medical students travel to Ethiopia, taking medical gear and supplementary resources, to carry out health and education focused programs within the school and community;
  2. Student advocates: Students run fundraisers, raising awareness of Compass’ partner organisations, and the objectives of Compass with the added benefit of raising funds for the respective programs

To the communities we serve in Ethiopia.  We contribute desperately needed resources and basic health knowledge. We have established a network of NGO partners who have years of experience and established relationships in Ethiopia, and they have guided us to where we can best focus our services. Compass has been able to identify areas of need that medical students can bring meaningful health-focused work to.

To the students involved in Compass. We offer annual trips to Ethiopian communities. These trips provide a unique opportunity to directly and actively engage with medical students at UWA. Such experiences are vital for doctors to achieve a level of cultural competency, providing an opportunity for biases to be challenged, and preparing and inspiring future work in foreign aid.

Students simultaneously become advocates through running events, raising funds and collecting needed resources. Compass catalyses the conservation in the Western Australian medical community about the international health gap, and raises awareness of our partner organisations.

Our Objectives

  1. Provide a platform for medical students to volunteer in areas of education and health care in Ethiopia;
  2. Strengthen the ability of our partner organisations to achieve high impact social outcomes;
  3. Produce sustainable change in areas of need in Ethiopia through implementation of our programs; and
  4. Encourage and develop UWA students’ social awareness, interpersonal skills and cultural competency in a dynamic environment

Clare is Compass’ Co-Director. With a background in delivering health education workshops to rural and urban high school students and migrants in Perth, Clare is helping coordinate the development and implementation of the health education component of Compass’ pilot trip.

Clare has previously worked for the AMA (WA) to deliver sexual and mental health education sessions to high school students, and coordinated a student-run organisation advocating for asylum seeker and refugee health in Perth. She is also very interested in rural health and removing barriers to healthcare for different populations.

Katie is one of the founders of Compass and is currently Co-Director. Her work with the Global Health Short Course and 180 Degrees Consulting has sparked her interest in global health. With Clare, she identified a niche where medical students could work in a synergistic relationship with the School of St Yared. Medical students would offer and empower Ethiopians to live a healthy life, and in return, they are exposed to a culturally enriching environment, that subsequently may inspire a career in foreign aid.

Katie hopes that Compass will expand its impact beyond Ethiopia, and become a dynamic and self-sustaining opportunity for future medical students.

Gemma is currently Compass’ Secretary. She works with the Compass team to help coordinate its day-to-day organisation as well as contributing to its health education focus, in particular the First Aid education program.

Gemma has had experience in several student-run organisations addressing inequalities in health and education present in Western Australia, including currently running an organisation focused on advocating for refugee and asylum-seeker health and Teach Learn Grow (TLG), an organisation tacking education inequality between rural and metro WA through mentoring and tutoring. Through TLG, Gemma has worked both on-the-ground with rural and Indigenous primary school students and behind-the-scenes as part of the executive team (Recruitment). Gemma is looking forward to seeing the sustainable impact Compass will have in Ethiopia, being a firm believer in the importance of education.

Aksh is the Logistics Officer at Compass, co-ordinating the behind-the-scenes operations to ensure each program runs smoothly. Aksh has a keen interest in global health and health equity, having experienced first-hand the healthcare disparity that exists in different parts of India, which inspired him to build Compass with other medical students from UWA.

Aksh is also involved with the health education programs that Compass runs, in particular the sexual health program. He works part-time as a sexual health peer educator with the YEP Project, which employs health promotion strategies to reduce the burden of STIs and blood-borne viruses on young people in WA. Aksh is the youth representative for the WA Primary Health Alliance committee, where he enjoys contributing to ensure improved health outcomes for the young people in the state. He is a strong believer in preventative medicine, and hopes to take the same message to the School of St Yared.

Daniel is Compass' Marketing and IT Director. With a strong background in graphic design and advertising for a number of organisations, including national professional bodies such as the Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia, Daniel coordinates Compass' marketing strategies and develops the organisation's corporate image. Along with Gemma, Daniel is responsible for the development of Compass' First Aid Program.

Daniel's interests in health care include infectious diseases and optimising transitions of care from hospital into the community. He is also very interested in rationalising pharmacotherapies and deprescribing, which have come about from his role as Senior Pharmacist at one of Perth's leading tertiary hospitals. Daniel is also interested in preventative health care, and hopes to improve the long term health outcomes of Ethiopian citizens through the implementation of Compass programs.
